Chapter 10
Jalen clasped the wrist of one hand in the palm of the other and settled his feet comfortably into the sand. The weather was cooperating beautifully for Justus and Dakota’s ceremony. And at seven thirty, the sun was just dipping below the horizon.
Clutching a tightly bound bouquet of red roses and yellow sunflowers, Dakota walked through the last rose-hued sunbeams to Justus’s side. The man looked like he could be knocked over with one finger.
Jalen bit back a grin. And then he looked over at Riley, standing there with the dusk-dimmed rays of the sun creating a halo in her upswept hair. Barefooted, with her shoes lying beside her, and her pink toenails curling in and out of the golden sand, she smoothed her hands over her green lace dress and smiled wistfully at the couple standing before them. That smile of hers made his pulse do crazy things, and he realized his expression just might mirror Justus’s.
Jalen transferred his attention to the sand in front of him and tried to focus on what the reverend was saying about the sanctity of the union between man and woman.
He wished he’d held back. Hadn’t pushed her. If he hadn’t kissed her so soon maybe she wouldn’t be running so hard, right now. Except…he could hardly find it in himself to regret that kiss.
But it had hurt a lot worse than he’d expected to hear her say they couldn’t be together. To have her drawing into herself like a turtle slowly receding into its shell.
When the minister pronounced, “May I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Justus Teague”, and everyone whooped and clapped, Jalen realized he’d let his mind wander again.
Justus and Dakota gave out hugs all around, faces beaming with little intimate smiles just for each other.
Jalen waited until everyone else had offered their congratulations before he approached and clapped Justus on the shoulder. He wondered if they were going to be able to have a honeymoon since they’d rushed so quickly into things. “Are you two going to get to run off somewhere together?”
Dakota started to say, “Well with my job—”
“—Actually, yes.” Justus grinned at Dakota with great satisfaction. “I talked to Dakota’s boss and we have two weeks off. We are leaving tonight for Portland, and then tomorrow we fly out to… Well, that’s my secret.” He pumped his eyebrows at his bride.
“Justus…” Dakota melted against him with a dreamy expression that left no question that she’d love to be alone with her husband right at that moment.
Jalen could take a hint. He clapped Justus on the shoulder once more. “Well, you two have a good trip.” He didn’t even think Justus heard him. He made his way across the sand to where the rest of the wedding party was sitting on a long driftwood log admiring the now crimson sunset.
Riley sat alone off to one side, slightly away from the other two couples. He eased down beside her.
“It was a nice ceremony,” she said, not taking her attention off the horizon.
